More than 100 participate in child protection awareness programme

More than 100 young children and early childhood development practitioners participated in a child protection awareness programme. The programmes took place in Tafelsig and Wynberg last week.
Hosted by the City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department, the programme created awareness of child protection through learn and play.
It also aimed to build capacity in ECD practitioners and focused on their roles and responsibilities in their workspace in respect of child protection.
‘Children are one of the most vulnerable groups in our communities and often bear the brunt of any social ills such as drug abuse or criminal activity. The main aim of the programme is to prevent the abuse and neglect of our children. It is an education and awareness process which engages both the little ones and their ECD teachers,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
The participants came from City owned ECD centres as well as centres in Mitchells Plain, Crossroads, Lotus River, Retreat, Masiphumelele and Lower Crossroads.
Several departments within the directorate collaborated on the programme.
Practitioners were taken through the Children’s Act and their roles and responsibilities by CACD, while the Arts & Culture Branch educated the young learners on rights and responsibilities and helped them create a poster on children’s rights .
The Libraries and Information Services Department used storytelling in their segment, while staff from Recreation and Parks took them through a play and dance segment with the theme, ‘My body is sacred’.
‘Every part of the programme was aimed at ensuring children feel safe and those who are in charge of their care, not only know what they have to do, but where to turn to if they do need help. We all need to play a part in keeping our children safe,’ added Councillor Higham.
The programme is a pilot and future events will be communicated.
